Long before the modern borders of India were drawn, the regions of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh formed the heart of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire, where Persian, Turkic, and Indic traditions converged. From this confluence emerged Qawwali — a genre of devotional music that echoed through the Sufi shrines and royal courts of Delhi and Lahore. Amir Khusro, its most iconic figure, bridged linguistic, cultural, and religious divides, using poetry and music to call for coexistence through the metaphor of the divine as a universal beloved. His composition Rang reflects the ecstasy of spiritual awakening — a world awash with color upon finding one’s master. Its verses embody the collective experience of discovering a higher purpose, whether in one’s passions or in the divine itself.
